Celem studiów I stopnia (licencjackich) jest wykształcenie wysokiej klasy specjalistów w dziedzinie nauki o informacji (bibliologii i informatologii), którzy posiadają wiedzę teoretyczną i praktyczną z zakresu tworzenia, wyszukiwania, organizacji oraz udostępniania zasobów informacyjnych za pomocą narzędzi różnego typu (zwłaszcza cyfrowych). Podczas zajęć studenci poznają sposoby i techniki korzystania z informacji oraz technologii informacyjno-komunikacyjnych, w tym projektowania i wykorzystania systemów informacyjnych. Poznają także specjalistyczne narzędzia umożliwiające dostęp do informacji oraz jej rzetelnej oceny. Nabywają wiedzę z zakresu wykorzystania zintegrowanych systemów bibliotecznych, multiwyszukiwarek naukowych, oprogramowania służącego tworzeniu bibliotek, archiwów i repozytoriów cyfrowych, metadanych dokumentów, ewolucji formy książki, prasy elektronicznej oraz innych problemów związanych z działalnością szeroko rozumianych instytucji informacji. Zdobywają umiejętność badania użytkowników informacji, w różnych perspektywach: czytelnika, uczestnika wydarzeń kulturalnych, klienta usług informacyjnych, mieszkańca - członka społeczności lokalnej. W efekcie poznania prezentowanych zagadnień i uzyskanych kompetencji absolwenci mają możliwość aktywnego uczestniczenia w pracach instytucji działających na potrzeby organizacji społeczności lokalnych, budowania sieci komunikacji i współpracy lokalnych podmiotów, a także stymulowania i aktywizacji mieszkańców.

Kierunek studiów informacja naukowa i bibliotekoznawstwo związany jest z naukami społecznymi, w programie pojawiają się również treści z nauk humanistycznych. Wiodącą dyscypliną studiów są nauki o komunikacji społecznej i mediach. Inne dyscypliny reprezentowane w programie studiów to: psychologia, historia, językoznawstwo, filozofia, literaturoznawstwo.

Absolwent studiów jest więc przygotowywany do pracy w centrach informacyjnych, bibliotekach i innych instytucjach kultury (np. ośrodkach kultury) zajmujących się tworzeniem, gromadzeniem, przechowywaniem, organizowaniem i udostępnianiem informacji w różnych formach i na różnych nośnikach. Nieodzownym elementem tego przygotowania jest poznanie narzędzi pracy, ale także form i metod pracy z użytkownikami informacji.

W trakcie studiów istnieje możliwość (dla chętnych) zrealizowania przedmiotów z bloku pedagogiczno-psychologicznego, dzięki którym student uzyskuje kwalifikacje pedagogiczne, potrzebne w pracy z dziećmi i młodzieżą, oraz niezbędne w pracy nauczyciela bibliotekarza. Szczególne znaczenie dla realizacji celów kształcenia mają praktyki zawodowe realizowane w trakcie trzech lat studiów (w programie przewidziane po I i II roku studiów). Ich celem jest zapoznanie studenta z warsztatem pracy w różnych instytucjach zajmujących się zarządzaniem informacją (np. ośrodkach informacji, bibliotekach) oraz wyszukiwaniem i organizacją zasobów informacyjnych pod kątem zróżnicowanych grup użytkowników, a także ukazanie możliwości adaptacji tej wiedzy do pracy w innych instytucjach zajmujących się wspieraniem edukacji (również środowiskowej), umacnianiem potencjału rozwojowego społeczności, rozwijaniem i wspieraniem integracji i aktywności lokalnej.

Realizacja programu studiów nakierowana jest na osiąganie efektów kształcenia w zakresie wiedzy, umiejętności oraz kompetencji społecznych, które są niezbędne na współczesnym rynku pracy. Niezbędne są we wszystkich instytucjach zajmujących się gromadzeniem, opracowaniem, przetwarzaniem i udostępnianiem informacji. Zakładane efekty kształcenia osiągnięte zostaną poprzez realizację programu studiów, który jest zamieszczony na stronie Wydziału Dziennikarstwa, Informacji i Bibliologii.

Program studiów I stopnia na kierunku informacja naukowa i bibliotekoznawstwo jest tak opracowany, że umożliwia kontynuację wybranych treści na studiach II stopnia.

Knowledge: the graduate knows and understands
K_W01 – facts, objects and phenomena as well as the theories describing them relevant to book studies, information studies and social communication and media studies, with their subject specificity
K_W02 – methodology of social communication and media sciences, as well as disciplines related to the field of study, to the extent corresponding to their interdisciplinary social and media cooperation and inspiration, with their subject specificity

K_W05 – rules of operation of library systems, both general and narrowed down to specific areas of research and/or professional activity
K_W06 – history and principles and forms of creation and operation of cultural and information institutions of various types
K_W07 – processes for the creation, management and assessment of the quality of document collections, as well as procedures and tools for accessing them
K_W08 – methods, forms and sociological and psycho-sociological conditions of communication with library users and other cultural institutions
K_W09 – legal, social, economic, technical and cultural aspects of the activity of cultural and information institutions
K_W10 – basic concepts and principles in the field of cultural heritage and copyright protection applicable in library and information activities and in education
K_W11 – basic sociological and psychological research directions as well as psychological characteristics of a human being
K_W12 – history of science, its development stages, structure and organization
K_W13 – selected historical issues and processes of Poland and Europe, including the historical evolution of culture
K_W14 – the construction and functioning of language as a system of signs and a tool of social communication
K_W15 – basic knowledge of literature, including belles-lettres as a cultural artifact and a source of artistic inspiration

Professional skills: the graduate is able to
