Graduates of the American Studies Center have specialized knowledge about American society and culture, and the relations between the U.S. and the world, including Europe.

The second-cycle studies program encompasses introductory lectures to the various disciplines that make up the curriculum, and a wide spectrum of electives; students are encouraged to enroll in elective classes which would inform their specific research projects. The program includes also a writing proseminar, master seminars, and other types of classes. The program runs for two years (four terms). The extramural programs (the weekday one and the weekend one) are tuition based. Some students in the weekday program do not pay tuition; this exemption is based on entrance exam scores. However, only Polish nationals, other EU and EFTA nationals are eligible for this exemption. The curriculum is the same for the non-paying and the paying students. The paying students have the option of choosing between the weekday and the weekend programs. The non-paying students are admitted only into the weekday program. The weekday program offers classes from Monday through Thursday. In the weekend program, classes are taught every second weekend on Friday afternoons, Saturdays and Sundays. The number of class hours is at least 80 percent of the number of hours taught in the weekday program. Eight weekend sessions of classes and one more exam session are offered to weekend students each semester. Graduates will have earned a “magister” degree which is comparable to Master of Arts degree in cultural studies with an emphasis in American Studies. Graduates of the Center find employment in an array of professions, e.g. business, foreign trade, journalism, media, culture, education, administration, foreign service and international organization, tourism.

Admission procedures:

The American Studies Center, University of Warsaw reserves the right not to start the extramural (weekend) program, if the number of the candidates admitted to the extramural (weekend) studies is lower than 40.

Eligible for admission are holders of a B.A., M.A., or other equivalent degree in any discipline.

Admission procedures - foreign diplomas:

Entrance exam is made up of two tests: Scholastic Aptitude and Knowledge about the U.S. Both tests are in English. The Scholastic Aptitude Test aims at testing the candidate’s ability to understand texts in English. It tests for both linguistic competence and the ability to think logically. The Knowledge about the U.S. Test checks the candidate’s knowledge of U.S. history, geography, politics and culture. Candidates must score at least 40% of the maximum on the two tests -counted jointly to pass the exam. The Admissions Commission may decide to lower this threshold to 30%. On the basis of candidates’ test results, ranking lists will be drawn up for the weekday non-paying and the extramural (paying) programs.

The top 60 candidates on the weekday non-paying ranking list qualify for the weekday non-paying program. A candidate qualifying for the weekday non-paying program may opt instead for the extramural (paying) program, usually in order to attend classes during weekends. In this case, the subsequent candidate on the weekday non-paying ranking list shall qualify for the weekday non-paying program.

Other candidates for the weekday non-paying program who have passed the exam but who do not qualify for that program because they ranked too low may be admitted to the extramural (paying) program based on availability, if their score puts them among the top 80 candidates on the extramural ranking list. Once the ranking lists are published on July 1, 2010 and there are still vacancies in the extramural programs, registration will be reopened until July 7, 2010. At that time, candidates interested in the extramural programs will be added to the extramural (paying) ranking list.

Candidates may register for both the weekday non-paying and the extramural (paying) programs under a single admission fee. To make the admission process run smoothly, candidates who are willing to consider the extramural (paying) programs, are encouraged to register for both the weekday non-paying and the extramural programs at the very start.

Only the candidates from the EU can be admitted to the non-paying weekday program. The fee for other foreign candidates is 2000 Euro per semester (it concerns all programs: weekday, evening and weekend).
