English for civics 4100-1SJASDWOSO
During the course, which lasts the three semesters, students deepen their knowledge of the basic issues related to civics taught as a CLIL subject in a primary school, at the second educational stage.
The main emphasis is placed on the acquisition of methods effective in teaching civics in English.
Topics discussed in the first semester:
- nationality, citizenship, various faces of patriotism
- national and ethnic minorities
- discrimination
- civic skills and virtues
- non-governmental organizations
- Poles abroad
Topics discussed in the second semester:
- international organizations (i.e. NATO, European Union, UN)
- international courts and tribunals
- Human Rights Ombudsman
- media and advertisements
Topics discussed in the third semester:
- national policy and functioning of the state
- the Sejm and the Senate
- the office of the President
- legislative process
- local self-government
The course ends with an exam after three semesters.
Only students who pass all three semesters of the course are eligible to take part in the exam.
The exam is conducted both in an oral and written form.

The graduate knows and understands:
K_W01: to an advanced degree selected facts, theories, institutions, processes, and phenomena related to social studies and relevant to teaching social studies at the second educational stage;
K_W03: the methods, norms, procedures and standards of practice in educational institutions, related to teaching social studies;
K_W09: the methodology to perform common tasks; the standards and procedures used in various educational areas.
The graduate is able to:
K_U01: search, analyse, evaluate, select and use information, using a variety of sources and methods, in Polish and English;
K_U02: independently plan and implement typical projects related to teaching social studies at the second educational stage;
K_U05: observe and assess the suitability of a variety of methods, procedures and best practices, and select and apply the appropriate approach with the goal of accomplishing tasks and solving problems related to teaching social studies;
K_U09: analyse their own actions and identify possible areas for change in the future;
K_U10: work with children from various cultural backgrounds and those with limited knowledge of the Polish language;
K_U12: communicate in Polish and in a foreign language, using a variety of channels and techniques, with all participants in the teaching-learning process and experts in the academic disciplines and subjects that are relevant to the field of social studies both in Polish and another language;
K_U13: prepare written work in English, relevant to the topic of social studies, at an appropriate academic level, on specific issues, using basic theoretical approaches and a variety of sources
K_U14: prepare, and deliver in public, oral presentations in English covering the topics related to social studies, using basic theoretical approaches, as well as a variety of sources.
The graduate is prepared to:
K_K01: pursue lifelong learning.
Assessment criteria
The subject ends with a grade.
One of the prerequisites for obtaining the final grade is presence and active participation in classes.
One absence per semester is allowed.
The final grade is the combination of:
a) presentation in a classroom
b) three vocabulary tests
c) active and regular work on the Kampus platform
The grading scale:
90-100% → 5
85-89% → 4,5
75-84% → 4
70-74% → 3,5
60-69% → 3
59%-31% → 2
30%-0% → NK
A pass grade for the semester is 60% overall
