European Union in the global financial crisis 4003-203UEWKF
The course will be divided into thematic blocks presenting the most important problems concerning the euro-zone crisis and the EU policy in this field.
• Types of economic crises
• The economic crisis of 2008 – essence and significance
• The EU against the crisis of 2008 – a new distribution of power in international economic relations
• The euro-zone crisis – genesis, history and mechanisms
• EU measures in response to the economic situation of some euro-zone countries (the so-called PIIGS)
• A review of anti-crisis instruments applied by the IMF and the World Bank (their application in the EU)
• BRICS and the USA against the euro-zone crisis
• Proposals for enhancing economic coordination in the EU (fiscal surveillance, non-fiscal macroeconomic surveillance, European Semester)
• European Financial Stability Facility and the European Central Bank
• The role and importance of the Fiscal Compact
• The place and role of the EU in the post-crisis world

Learning outcomes
Having completed the programme, students are expected:
in terms of KNOWLEDGE to:
• know the causes and mechanisms of the economic crisis of 2008
• understand what factors determine the shape of contemporary economic crises
• have knowledge of the essence of the economic crisis in the euro area
• know the main anti-crisis instruments in international financial institutions
• have knowledge of the influence of the euro-zone crisis on the Polish economy (and politics)
in terms of SKILLS to be able to:
• explain the essence of economic crises in the contemporary world
• explain the role and importance of states and international financial institutions in solving the problem of economic crises
• describe the anti-crisis instruments and mechanisms in the euro area
• analyse and assess the anti-crisis measures in the euro area
• present the positions of various states on the possible solutions of the euro-zone crisis
in terms of SOCIAL COMPETENCIES to be:
• more independent in applying theoretical knowledge in analysing the basic phenomena in international economic and political relations
• more responsible, due to the fact that attendance at the lectures is not obligatory and students are left with a choice as to the ways of obtaining knowledge presented at the lectures
• more diligent and honest due to the rigorous enforcement of examination requirements
Assessment criteria
The process of obtaining credits for the course consists of: an oral exam: passing mark – 60 % of total points
