(in Polish) Karaimi polsko-litewscy: wyznanie i etnos 3600-TU-KPLWE-OG
The aim of the lecture is to acquaint students with issues of (self)identity of Polish-Lithuanian Karaims - an ethno-confessional group originating from Crimea and constituting at present the smallest officially recognized ethnic minority in Poland. Adherents of Karaite Judaism, they reject the Oral Torah and recognize the Written Torah (the Bible) as the sole authority in religious law. Since the end of 14th century Karaims have been residents of Lithuania and till nowadays they have managed to preserve their native language belonging to the Kipchak branch of Turkic languages. At the end of the 18th c. a process of changes in Karaims' self identity has began, leading to replacing their confessional identity by an ethnic one based on Turkic origins of Karaims.
