Sociology and Anthropology of Medicine, and Methodology of Social Sciences 3501-BE-ZK-SAMMNS
Anthropology and sociology of medicine consider the cultural and social aspects of the body, health, sickness and healing. This course introduces students to the central concepts and methods of sociology and anthropology of medicine. We will focus on the cultural and social construction of health and sickness and examine such issues as: illness – metaphors and narratives; physicians, shamans, healers;, structural violence and health care disparities; social factors and health; disability; health and gender; disease and child; old age, sickness and death; global health; biological citizenship; reproduction and kinship; fertility; new medical technologies; new genetics. Moreover, the readings will enable students to become conversant about a number of issues in anthropology and sociology, including ethnical and methodological aspects of social science (social critics, engaged anthropology and applied anthropology).
