Shades of strangeness. Forms of racism in Polish society 3500-ADI-ODB
The division into one's own and strangers in thinking is a universal phenomenon. Just as familiarity is built on various principles (worldview, cultural similarity, tastes, passions, professional competences), strangeness is sometimes constructed on various grounds. One of them is physical: appearance, physiognomy, and especially color (and even skin tone). We will focus our classes on the latter phenomenon - perceiving, assessing and drawing conclusions from these observations regarding external dissimilarity.
In our nationwide poll "Poles and others", many questions concerned the attitude of Polish society towards people who are physically different from the vast majority of Poles. They concerned: the racial factor in recognizing a foreigner as a Pole (an element of the scope of inclusiveness), declarations of opinions about "better" and "worse" races, as well as many very specific situations that we presented to the respondents, in which people of a different skin color appear in different, sometimes very important social roles.
During the classes, we intend to discuss the choices and more detailed statements of our respondents, as well as to distinguish the category of respondents showing a special distance to people who are physically different. We will also analyze the deeper foundations and assumptions inherent in these choices and statements, which we believe will lead us to distinguish different mental structures behind apparently uniform racist attitudes. in 1988, 1998 and 2018
In this way, we intend to join the in-depth consideration of the problems that have acquired a strong ideological and also political value in recent years. Colonialism in its various forms created the concept of inequality, a hierarchy of races, while forgetting the commonwealth. Slavery on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean lasted until the second half of the 19th century, and its effects are visible on the legal level until the 1960s, and in the psychological sphere until today. Central European countries that did not participate in the colonial division are largely free from these burdens. We will analyze the situation in one of these countries (Mikulska 2010; Nowicka 2011), and especially among sports fans (Italy 2014). The latest report by the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance in 2015 stated that nothing has improved in Poland over the past five years in terms of racial hatred and xenophobic content on the Internet and in the media
During the workshop, the participants and the teachers will conduct and analyze the interviews and compare them with the results of other sociological research. The workshop will result in the preparation of a research report under the guidance of the lecturers.
