- Communication in AVT
- Historical and cultural perspectives on subtitling and dubbing
2. Dubbing as a mode of AVT:
- Technical constraints and translation techniques
- Dubbing as domestication
3. Subtitling as a mode of AVT:
- Technical constraints and conventions
- Translation techniques
- Subtitling as foreignisation
4. Voiceover
5. Linguistic and cultural issues in English-Polish AVT
6. Linguistic and cultural issues in Polish-English AVT
7. Accessibility in AVT:
- Subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing (SDH)

Learning outcomes
KNOWLEDGE:
The students:
- will learn/ broaden their knowledge about translation theories and about the complexity of the process of translation;
- will learn/ broaden their knowledge about terminology used in linguistics, applied linguistics and translation studies.
SKILLS:
The students:
- will be able to assess the usefulness of theoretical approaches for research purposes and for varying practical applications;
- will be able to appreciate the diversity of opinions presented in written texts and discussions and use those opinions as a source of inspiration rather than a threat to their own system of values.
In class discussions students acquire skills of expressing their thoughts in a clear, coherent, logical and precise manner, with the use of language which is correct grammatically, lexically and phonetically.
SOCIAL COMPETENCES:
The students:
- will consciously participate in their own national culture, respect the European cultural heritage, and show understanding of and interest in the diversity of world cultures;
- will be tolerant towards otherness, respect unfamiliar cultural behaviour and alternative individual worldviews.
Assessment criteria
Credit requirements:
1) attendance and active participation in all in-class activities, 2) the satisfactory completion of home assignments, 3) writing an essay of 3-4 pages (Times New Roman, 1,5 spacing) providing either an analysis of selected aspects of the translation of an audiovisual production of one’s own choice or a theoretical discussion of chosen aspects involved in AVT.
If the essay is negatively assessed. the student is required to write a new one (on the same or a different topic, depending on the reasons for negative assessment).
Min. 80% attendance required.
