British Fiction in the 20th Century - MA Seminar 3 3301-LBS3OR
The seminar for MA students who plan to write their theses about contemporary British novels, short stories and non-fiction (autobiographies, biographies, journalism, essays etc.).
- In the first semester students choose writers (or some broader cultural phenomena) they want to discuss in their dissertations. During the classes we analyse texts of students' choice (short stories, chapters of novels, essays); each participant is also supposed to gather and present secondary sources a propos his/her thesis. The semester is concluded by students formulating subjects of their future thesis.
- The second semester is devoted to more detailed discussion of students prospective theses, each participant has a presentation of his/her work in progress; the semester (and the first year of the seminar) ends with students preparing a plan of their paper and writing the first draft of one of the chapters.
- The third semester is a sequence of classes during which individual students present their work: critical approach they take, critical essays they refer to, problems they encounter and conclusions they reach; the group discusses their problems together.
- The fourth and final semester is entirely devoted to work on the text the students produce: they hand in subsequent subchapters or chapters which are then proof-read and given back.
The beginning of May is the deadline when the first draft of the MA thesis should be ready.
