Close Reading of a Major English Text 3301-LB1014
During the classes we discuss James Joyce’s Ulysses. Every week students read at home a part of the text which then is analysed in detail. Thus the text is divided into sections which basically correspond to Joyce’s division into episodes, though sometimes we talk about two episodes during one class. The division is as follows:
- Telemachus and Nestor
- Proteus
- Calypso
- The Lotus Eaters
- Hades and Aeolus
- The Lestrygonians Scylla & Charybdis
- The Wandering Rocks and The Sirens
- The Cyclops
- Nausicaa
- The Oxen of the Sun
- Circe
- Eumaeus and Ithaca
- Penelope.
Joyce’s text is discussed in the context of Irish culture, history and politics of the period; the poetics of Modernism; Joyce’s earlier texts; and the epic tradition. Students are supposed to have read A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man . Additionally, Homer’s The Odyssey is often referenced and each student once in the semester prepares a short presentation of one Homeric motif.
