The course aims to present the situation of Spanish in today's multicultural societies, ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse,both in the Iberian peninsula and in Latin America, the Carribbean and the US. Students will become familiar with selected variants and dialects of Spanish. Analysis of texts and audiovisual material from different regions of the Spanish-speaking countries will also be part of the course.
The course will cover the following topics:
• Multiculturalism in the Iberian Peninsula
- Spanish in the bilingual regions of Spain
- an example of southern dialect
- Latin American immigration in Spain
• Bilingualism in Latin America
• Spanish in the Caribbean region
• Hispanic and Latino Americans in the US.

Upon completion of the program a student will be able to:
KNOWLEDGE
- know the basic terminology of the humanities (in particular linguistics and cultural studies) K_W02
- know the basic terminology used in the description of language, culture, history, philosophy and understand its sources and applications K_W03
- have an elementary knowledge of the research methodology on culture, history, and language K_W04
SKILLS
- search, analyze, evaluate and select information, taking advantage of different sources and methods K_U01
- put theoretical knowledge into practice;
- present substantive arguments in the discussion on the diversity of the Spanish language

- are ready to use knowledge of Spanish in their professional careers and express himself/herself very well
Assessment criteria
The final evaluation will be based on the following criteria:
Active participation: 25%
Presentation: 25%
Final test: 50% (a minimu passing score 60/100)
