Cross-culture studies 3224-Z6-KULP
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the problems of borderland culture. During the course the following issues will be discussed:
1. The concept of borderland and borderland culture;
2. Frontier types (regional, inter-state, inter-system, inter-ethnic, intercultural, religious);
3. Static borderlines (eg interstate);
4. Dynamic, dispersed borderlands (eg religious - example: borderland between Poles and Jews in the interwar period);
5. Asymmetry of borderlands (eg Polish-German and German-Polish);
6. Historical boundary change;
7. Types of discourse about borderlands and borderlands;
8. Anthropological dimension of the borderland: meeting with the Other / Foreign;
9. Anthropological dimension of the borderland: the question of identity - religious, national, regional, etc .;
10. Borderland to the experience of totalitarianism and fundamentalism;
11. The concept of the region: Central Europe - Central and Eastern Europe - Międzymorze;
12. Poland: historical volatility of Polish borderlands;
13. Polish-German and German-Polish borderland;
14. Polish-Ukrainian and Ukrainian-Polish borderland;
15. The Polish-Belarusian, and Belarusian-Polish border;
16. Polish-Russian and Russian-Polish borderland;
17. Polish-Lithuanian and Lithuanian-Polish border;
18. "Weak" Polish-Czech (Czech-Polish) and Polish-Slovak (Slovak-Polish) borderlands;
19. Polish initiatives related to borderland discourse: the Borussia Association in Olsztyn and the Pogranicze Foundation in Sejny
20. Borderline processuality, changes in the category of discourse, questions about the future.

Learning outcomes
Student after completing the course:
1) knows various cultural models and their interrelationships in the symbolic and semiotic sphere, in the space of culture and art, literature and language as well as the history of Central and Eastern European countries (S1_W04, Reference to the directional effects of education: K1_W03 K1_W04 K1_W06) .
2) knows the broadly understood intercultural context, has knowledge about man, as an entity constructing social structures and cultural products, is aware of the principles of their functioning and the resulting differences in the perception of social life by representatives of different nationalities (S1_W10, Reference to directional learning outcomes : K1_W04, K1_W05, K1_W07).
3) is able to develop their research skills, independently acquire knowledge, using the support of a tutor; skillfully formulate thoughts, present the results of research in the form of an oral or written statement (S1_U03, Reference to the directional learning outcomes: K1_U03, K1_U02).
4) recognize different kinds of cultural products of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, analyze them, distinguish different perspectives on the development of culture, aware of differences in cultural identities and context (S1_U05, Reference to directional learning outcomes: K1_U05, K1_07).
5) prepare a written and oral statement, on selected topics in the field of borderline culture issues and present the results of their work on the group forum (S1_U06, Reference to the directional learning outcomes: K1_U01, K1_U08, K1_U09).
6) is able to use the acquired knowledge at various stages of participation in typical professional situations (S1_U08, Reference to the directional learning outcomes: K1_U06, K1_U07, K1_U08).
7) gains competence in the ability to continually learn and supplement acquired knowledge (S1_K04, Reference to major learning outcomes: K1_K01, K1_K02).
Assessment criteria
The condition for admission to pass is compulsory attendance (maximum number of unjustified absences is allowed).
Classes will be conducted in the form of a discussion about a given reading material or material presented by the lecturer in the form of a presentation. Active participation in the discussion means substantive participation in the discussion during at least 50% of the classes.
There is also a written work (3-6 p.) Or a presentation on the topic given by the teacher.
The final evaluation consists of:
Active and substantive participation in classes (50%).
Written work or presentation on a subject designated by the teacher (50%).
