Logic and semiotics 3224-Z5LOGSEM
After completing the course, students: 1) know logical terminology, 2) know the notion of reasoning and know what a logical scheme of reasoning consists of; 3) can differentiate between language of logic and natural language; 4) have the basic knowledge of semantics; 5) know how to define correctly the units of natural language; 6) know what semiotics is and how it is divided; 7) know how to understand a sign in various ways; 8) know the relation between sign, meaning and system; 9) have the basic knowledge of semiotics of culture; 10) can identify sentential conjunctions and other logical symbols; 11) can express relation between sentences in the language of the first-order logic; 12) can paraphrase simple sentences of natural language to logical formulas, and vv. 13) can identify and express relations between the units of natural language; 14) can formulate a correct syllogism; 15) can identify formal errors in the formulas of wrong reasoning; 16) can state various ways of understanding a sign.
LOGIC:
1. Reasoning: a) notion of reasoning; b) logical schemata of reasonin.
2. Sentential conjunctions: a) negation; b) conjunction; c) disjunction; d) equivalence; e) implication.
3. Logic vs. natural language.
4. Logical models of utterances; symbolization of the sentences of natural language.
5. Relations between the units of natural language – semantics.
6. The models of defining the linguistic units.
SEMIOTICS:
1.The general theory of sign.
2. Sign in the conceptions of Ch. S. Peirce, Ch. W. Morris, F. de Saussure and L. Hjelmslev.
3. Meaning and system.
4. Various kinds of semiotics: a) theoretical semiotics; b) semiotic as a method; c) applied semiotics.
5. Semiotics of culture; on the meaning of non-artistic texts of culture.
6. People in the universe of signs

Assessing the skills the skills required in solving logical problems and the knowledge of the topics covered during the course; written mid-term test: relations between sentences (first-order logic); semantics.
oral final exam: subjects covered during the course, excluding semantics.
