Elective course: Optional subject: Mediatization of culture and intercultural relations in the modern world - ZIP 3224-PRZEDF18
This course indicates the specifics of the phenomenon of mediatization as a social process, its functions and scripts, as well as its pressure on the postmodern culture in which a new field is created, the media field. The rules of existence in the media field are transferred to other social fields.
The key aspects of mediatization are also considered through the prism of selected communicational, ideological and anthropological problems. In general, the course offers a view to the person living in the times of the multimedia revolution, and discusses the domination of visuality over comprehension.
During the course, the students develops their research skills, learns to acquire knowledge independently, using the support of a research tutor.
This course covers the following topics:
Relations between culture and media.
Mediatization as a shaping and framing of the processes and discourse of cultural and intercultural communication.
Functions and scenarios of mediatization.
Mediatization of culture as a challenge.
Print culture and image culture.
Media representations of culture: effects on the recipients of the culture of images;
The influence of the priority of image over text on the functions of culture, and on the way the world of culture is perceived.
Homo videns as a result of mediatization.
Media consumerism and mass culture: the experience of Central and Eastern Europe.
Culture in the conditions of the civilization of media entertainment.
Media and political culture: trivialization and emotionalization of political and cultural life.
Mediocracy.
Media as a translator of cultures.
Media stereotyping of culture.
Image of Polish culture in Ukrainian media and Ukrainian culture in Polish mass media.
Student workload:
