Philosophy of culture 3224-D7FILKU
Students are able to indicate, name and characterize: 1) problems connected with attempts to define the term “culture”; 2) methodological problems of the so-called cultural studies and consequences of these problems; 3) differences between “science” and “knowledge”. Students know: 4) what scientific judgements are and how they differ from rhetorical judgements’ 5) what the differences between science and ideology are; 6) under which circumstances ideology may appear in science, especially in the so-called cultural studies. Students understand what is 7) the role of language and communication in culture, 8) the role of culture in interhuman communication. Students can identify, characterize and apply: 9) relatistic theory of culture and 10) semiotic approach to culture to study of culture. After completing the course, students have a basic knowledge of theory of culture and know the main problems that every theory of culture faces.
1) Terminological problems with the term “culture”:
(a) term and concept – differences; (b) defining culture; (c) the essence of culture; (d) culture as the subject of study.
2) Methodological elements of the so-called cultural studies:
(a) science – understandning; (b) science vs. knowledge;
(c) scientific judgements vs. rhetorical
judgements; (d) science and ideology.
3) Meanings as the substance of culture.
4) Relatistic theory of culture.
5) Culture and nature.
6) Culture, language and communication.
7) Semiotics of culture.
8) The General Systems Theory.
9) Culture and history: historical
materialism.
10) Culture and globalization.
11) Ideology and the so-called
cultural studies.
