The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the basic problems of Russian history from 1918 to modern times. During the course the following issues will be discussed:
1. Civil war in Russia
2. Establishment of the USSR. Internal policy of the USSR in the 1920s. NEP. korenizatsiya
3. USSR in the 1930s. Collectivization. Industrialization. Great terror
4. Foreign policy of the USSR in 1922-1939
5. Soviet foreign policy in 1939-1941
6. "Great Patriotic War": war preparations. The course of military operations in 1941-1943: consequences
7. "Great Patriotic War": the course of military operations in 1943-1945. Losses and effects
8. Resistance and collaboration with the Third Reich
9. USSR and Western Allies
10. USSR in the post-war Stalinist era (1945-1953). Internal and foreign policy.
11. Attempts to reform the Soviet society (1953-1964). Khrushchev's thaw.
12. Real socialism. ZSRS in the years 1965-1985. Internal and foreign policy
13. Soviet dissident movement.
14. "Reconstruction" Gorbachev. Internal reforms. The collapse of the USSR.
15. Internal policy of the Russian Federation (1991-1999).

17. Russia's internal policy (after 2000).
18. Foreign policy of the Russian Federation.

Learning outcomes
1) knows and understands Russian history after 1918 and in contemporaneity.
2) looks up, analyses, evaluates, selects and utilizes information about Russian history after 1918 and in contemporaneity.
3) in reference to acquired theoretical and practical knowledge is able to use it in typical statements about Russian history after 1918 and in contemporaneity with consideration of global context, to formulate them logically, in reference to opinions of other participants of communicative situation.
4) is able to develop his research abilities, to acquire knowledge on his own with assistance of tutor; to formulate thoughts capably, to present research results in oral and written form.
5) is able to prepare written or oral statement about selected topics about Russianhistory after 1918 and in contemporaneity and to present results in the group.
6) is able to use acquired knowledge at different stages of participation in typical situation of professional life.
7) attains competences in matters of ability to continuous training and complementing of acquired knowledge.
Assessment criteria
Condition of admission to examinations is compulsory attendance in the courses (permitted only one unreasonable absence).
Courses will consist of discussion about scheduled literature or material presented by tutor in form of presentation. Active participation in discussion means that student contributes to discussion during at least 50% classes.
Student will also write one paper (3-6 pages) or presentation about topic delimited by tutor.
Oral exam will contain two questions about material presented during course and one question regarding one book chosen by student from the list of readings (but not one of the textbooks).
Final assessment depends on:
Active and factual participation in discussion during course (20%).
Written paper or presentation about topic delimited by tutor (20%).
Oral exam containing three questions (60%).
(comprehensive answer to one question = 20%, partial answer to one question = 10%).
