Memory and generations in literature - ZIP 3222-PPL4K-OG
The aim of the course is to teach students to understand and analyze the generational character of literary and cultural changes and the formation of a generational identity in culture, to define the processes and mechanisms of intergenerational communication due to general cultural patterns and characteristics of a specific tradition and situation.
Achieving this goal is associated with the implementation of specific goals:
• familiarizing students with the main theoretical and methodological versions of the generational approach to literature;
• learning about the advantages and disadvantages of generational identification, comparing them with other methods of literary classification;
• master the basic terminological tools of the generational approach to literature and demonstrate its analytical and interpretative possibilities;
• determining the mechanisms of cultural continuity in the context of contemporary research on memory, considering the specificity of their functioning in the modern era;
• teaching students to independently recognize and understand generational phenomena in literature, to recognize methods of generation identification and representation;
• develop the ability to conduct discussions, justify your position;
• deepening the skills of scientific literary analysis of a work of art in accordance with the selected theoretical and methodological perspective.
The course covers the study and critical analysis of the theoretical foundations of the generational approach - from classic works by Wilhelm Dilthey, Wilhelm Pinder, Karl Mannheim, Martin Heidegger, Shmuel Eisenstadt, Francois Mantry, Jose Ortega y Gasset, Sigmund Norrozeid Freud, Gerd, Kazimierz Vicky to the latest collective research projects and publishing houses, such as "Post-colonialism. Generations. Culture: theoretical revisions ”(2014) or“ Generational phenomenon as rebellion and de (construction) ”(2018), as well as basic concepts of memory theory as a mechanism of intergenerational communication.
The course structure is reflected in the following topics:
1. Generation as a way of cultural identification.
2. Generations in traditional and modern culture.
3. Conceptualization of a generation in the humanitarian tradition of the 20th century.
4. Memory: intergenerational communication.
5. Revolution as an event initiating generations.
6. Contemporary Ukrainian literature through the prism of a generation.
7. Literature of Vitalism or the "Arrow Revival"?
8. "House of the Word": a film representation of the 1920-30 generation.
9. Emigration and diaspora: generational differences.
10. The sixties / dissidents: the social and cultural context.
11. The seventies, or the "quiet generation".
12. The eighties: modernists, postmodernists or the "Chernobyl generation"?
13. The nineties / nineties / nineties: a generation by analogy?
14. Two-thousandths, i.e. generating zeros: Z = zero?
15. A generational tear in the present or the creation of a transgenerational community?

Assessment criteria
The condition for passing the subject and admitting the final test is: • systematic preparation of the assigned material for the classes. Students independently analyze the literature, research selected literary and cultural discourses, formulating conclusions and putting forward research hypotheses.
The subject ends with a grade according to the following criteria presented in the form of percentage thresholds 60% - 64% - 3 (satisfactory) 65% - 72% - 3+ (satisfactory plus) 73% - 84% - 4 (good)
85% - 89% - 4+ (good plus) 90% - 96% - 5 (very good) 97% -100% - 5! (very good grade with an exclamation mark) Assessment criteria: - achievement of the assumed learning outcomes covering all important aspects - 5.0 (very good grade) - achievement of the assumed learning outcomes covering all significant aspects with a small number of errors or inaccuracies - 4.5 (good plus) - achievement of the assumed learning outcomes, omitting some (less important) aspects - 4.0 (good) - achieving the assumed learning outcomes, disregarding some important aspects and with significant inaccuracies - 3.5 (satisfactory plus) - achieving the assumed outcomes education omitting important aspects or with serious inaccuracies - 3.0 (satisfactory plus) - failure to achieve the assumed learning outcomes - 2.0 (unsatisfactory). The student has the right to 3 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires a justification. Classes during which the student was absent may be included in the lecturer's duty hours. Exceeding justified and unjustified absences for 50% of classes may be the basis for failing the course. The student has the right to take the exam in the re-sit session in the same form as in the basic session and on the condition of obtaining a credit for the subject.
NOTES If it is not possible to conduct classes in the form of stationary classes, classes will be conducted using remote communication tools, most likely Google Meet and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
