Bachelor’s Degree Lecture:The cultural relations between Poland and the German-speaking countries (literature, translation, language) 3200-L3-0WL-RKP
Poland and the German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) have long-standing cultural, literary and linguistic relations, which have led to a rich, varied and sometimes difficult dialogue between the countries. During this course, students are introduced to selected and representative examples which show how these relations have developed in specific fields and at specific times. All the examples are related to the subjects students have studied so far, so they should be able to apply the knowledge they have acquired so far to new issues.
Possible topics and areas to be discussed during the lecture include:
* the history of cultural relations between Poland and German-speaking countries,
* the reception of German literature in Poland and Polish literature in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (trends, authors, texts),
* translators and interpreters of literature as intermediaries between cultures,
* scientific contacts (German studies, linguistics, Slavonic studies),
* learning German in Poland and Polish in German-speaking countries,
* institutions important for cultural relations (cultural institutes, research institutes).
In addition to the presentation of the topic, the lecture will also introduce the students to relevant methodologies which are helpful in the study of specific topics. All of this should provide the students with concrete perspectives and inspirations which can guide them in the choice of their Bachelor's thesis topic.
The basic form of this course is a lecture, where the teacher explains the most important topics and issues, which are connected with the discussed subject. The course is supported by various audiovisual materials. Classes take place in the form of multimedia presentations in PP, containing film recordings, songs, photos, literary texts etc. Classes could also have a conversational form, where for example 60 minutes is dedicated for the presentation, and about 30 minutes for the discussion and interpretation of theoretical texts or literary works previously read by students. The common lecture of selected fragments should furthermore enable a discussion, what is in some cases enriched with work in small groups.
Course workload:
30 hrs – classroom activities (1 ECTS)
45 hrs – reading and analyzing of texts, preparing to take part in the discussion during the course (1,5 ECTS)
15 hrs – preparation for the exam (0,5 ECTS)
In the event of inability to conduct the traditional in-class lessons, the course’s contact hours will be conducted remotely with the use of the devices recommended by the University of Warsaw

- have basic knowledge of contemporary achievements, centers and research schools including selected areas of applied linguistics (including translation) and literary studies (K_W06)
- have a basic knowledge of cultural institutions and orientation in contemporary cultural life (K_W10)
SKILLS
- able to search, analyze, evaluate, select and integrate information from various sources and formulate on this basis critical judgments in the field of applied linguistics (including translatory) as well as literary studies (K_U01)
- able to apply basic research skills including: analysis of research works of other authors, synthesis of various ideas and views, selection of methods and construction of research tools, elaboration and presentation of results, able to find decisions for complex problems in applied linguistics (including translatory) and literary studies (K_U02)
- able to apply critical analysis and interpretation of various types of cultural products in the context of historical and cultural processes in the German-speaking countries (K_U05)
- able to substantively argue with reference to own views and views of other authors, formulate conclusions and create synthetic summaries in at least one foreign language (K_U06)
- able to prepare good quality oral presentations in Polish and at least one foreign language in the field of the discipline studied or in an area of different disciplines integrated (K_U09)
SOCIO-CULTURAL COMPETENCIES
- interact in a group and discuss with the other students about the gathered insights from the reading of a selected literary text (K_K01, S_K02, S_K04)
- be aware of cultural differences existing between the literature of German speaking countries and Poland (K_K04, S_K06)
- esteem the cultural tradition and heritage of the German speaking countries an is aware of his responsibility to preserve them (K_K05, S_K10)
- take an active part in the cultural life of the German speaking countries (K_K06, S_K10)
Assessment criteria
Credit at the end of the term, based on regualar attendance and a written exam (eg. open questions, multiple-choice).

100% = 5!
90%= 5
85-90%= 4,5
80-84%=4
70-79%=3,5
60-69%=3
0-59%=2
Credit (“zaliczenie”) at the end of the term, based on regualar attendance (max. 2 missed classes). Obligatory is also regular preparation for classes. Individual, additional work in case of more than 2 missed classes during the semester. If the number of absences exceeds 50% of contact hours, it will result in a negative grade from the entire course.
The rules for passing a subject in the retake exam session are the same as in the main session. The retake exam may be oral.
