Archaelogy of Rome and the Roman Provinces 3101-DB206B/II
The aim of the classes will be to acquaint the participants with the basic topic concerning the archaeology of the Roman world. At first, the general introduction will be presented: Roman settlement, provincial administration, organization of the borders. The participants will learn about building techniques, Roman technology including infrastructure, and the most important monuments of Roman provincial architecture as well as military sites and structures. Typical finds of Roman material culture will be presented: objects of daily use (pottery, lamps, jewelry etc.), sepulchral monuments and those related to religion. Particular interest will be given to the sources - different categories of finds discovered during excavations, methods of dating and interpretation, with a special regard to the provincial culture and military millieu.
