Adventures of a mega-project: Nowy Świat Canal, city of Elbląg and the Baltic issue 3002-KON2021K38-OG
Building a shipping canal connecting the Vistula Lagoon with the Bay of Gdańsk will leave its mark: in culture - it is an alleged shift of Polish land culture towards the seaside, and the "post-German" Elbląg is to provide an identity space and make it a major seaport; in the landscape - it is the first, since the time of digging the mouth of the Vistula, a great anthropogenic and technological intervention in the landscape of the north-east. Polish; in politics (foreign, domestic and municipal) - it is independence from Russia that limits the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Baltiysk,a support for other geopolitical ideas and the success of Elbląg in the competition with the Tri-City. These are as much contemporary and controversial issues as they refer to ideas and processes from the past, requiring analysis from a cultural-historical perspective that integrates various fields of science, focused on the history of culture and the city.
