Anthropology of jazz – the musical theory and practice 3002-KON2020K14-OG
Selected topics:
– Main styles and jazz idioms (swing, bebop, cool, hard bop, modal jazz…; and also blues, latin jazz, bossa-nova, fusion).
– The instruments used in jazz and their properties. Jazz repertoire, lead sheet, fake books. Terminology. Activities and practices: jazz clubs, jam sessions, concerts, records.
– Typical jazz harmonic structure and devices, musical scales, chord progressions, harmonic substitutions etc. Forms of tunes and jazz standards.
– The complex matter of rhythm. Tempos, puls structure. Syncopation, shuffle, swing, ballad, latin rhythms, groove, funk etc. Meter, accent and articulation. Poly- and crossrhythms. Body, dance, movement.
– Jazz and philosophy. Improvisation as a “mimetic” procedure and as a “dangerous supplement”.
