Foreign mass - media systems 2101-L-Z4ZSME
The course characterizes institutions and mass media systems operating in developed democracies, such as USA, Britain, France, Germany and countries in transition such as a system in Russia.
Characteristics of systems in the various countries includes both organizational structure and operation of key institutions involved in information collection and dissemination (news agencies, newspapers and magazines, specialized and high-volume press, radio network and television, etc.)
Legal and market mechanisms and the socio-cultural, historical and political influence on the development of media systems; governing the operation and interaction of these institutions within the system of national broadcasters.
Practical classes are devoted to expanding the knowledge acquired in lectures, they cover key media in each country, including a comparison of the media institutions operation in different media markets. Analyzed the problems of information globalization, media concentration and internationalization of media companies, and mechanisms that determine the operating conditions and limitations of the profession of journalist.

- The student has knowledge of the global media systems, including the functioning of media in modern European states and the media power of influencing the transformation of other systems, such as the U.S. media system.

- Student can identify the most important media institutions in these countries, i.e. important newspapers, radio and TV stations, media companies, media markets regulators)
- Student understands the phenomenon of media concentration, information globalization and legal restrictions of media freedom

- Explains and compares the media characteristics depending on historical circumstances, market and legal; assigns national media institutions, and analyzes national and transnational effects of their actions on media markets.
Assessment criteria
Oral or written exam. Exam test covers the knowledge gained while participating in lectures, and partly in the practical classes.
Practical classes: attendance (possible two absences in a semester), plus written work on the chosen topic and the possibility of its presentation in the classroom (in the form of a short lecture or multimedia presentation)
