Urban Studies and Comparative Approach 1900-SM-2-6MEP
The class consists of two parts: the first,
theoretical, is an overview of the issue of
comparative research in the social sciences
and humanities, with a particular focus on
urban studies. The second part deals with
the art of scientific writing itself. First,
students will submit one of the texts they
wrote last semester on which we will
work. We will analyze it thoroughly and on
its example we will see what are the most
common mistakes in scientific writing and
how to avoid them. We will learn how to
prepare for the writing process itself, how
to build paragraphs, and from paragraphs
larger wholes; how to write abstracts and
prepare to write longer and more complex
texts. We will work on texts written by
students.
Design and implementation of research projects:
In particular, the aim of the seminar is to familiarize students with research of various scales, budgets, goals (basic, applied, implementation, activist) - from short-term local research, through national research, to large comparative international research projects carried out through networks or by consortia. During the course, various strategies related to the research project implementation cycle will be discussed, from problem formulation, through the selection of a model and methodology, team, budgeting, division of labor, management, communication issues, promotion of results and publications.
In the practical layer, we will look at the actual forms used by municipal, national and foreign institutions, as well as the application forms for commissioned research (SIWZ / SOPZ). We will discuss the most common dilemmas, problems and conflicts accompanying research in the field of urban studies and we will ask the guests how they coped in such situations. In particular, the forms and selection criteria of NCN, NCBiR, Horizon2020 and ESPON will be analyzed.
Particular attention will be paid to the comparative approach in urban research as well as to art and selection criteria for case studies in comparative projects.

Learning outcomes
In terms of knowledge, the student/s
knows and understands:
(1) identifies and understands in depth the
phenomena subject to comparative
research in urban studies and knows the
methods and theories explaining the
complex relationships between them
(K_W01).
(2) main trends in urban studies and
contemporary thematic agenda in urban
studies in national and international
research publications (K_W02).
In terms of skills, they can:
(1) prepare for the process of writing a
research paper (K_U01, K_U02, K_U7).
(2) design activities to disseminate the
results of research projects in a manner
appropriate to a given audience (K_U04).
In terms of social competence:
(1) is able to prepare independently and
critically to write a scientific paper (K_K01)
(2) he/she is able to combine realization of
research projects with fulfilling social
obligations, inspiring and organizing
activity for social environment (K_K03).
Assessment criteria
Students will receive one grade for both
courses in the "Comparative Studies"
block. This grade will consist of two
components: participation in the
workshop (submission of all required
work) and presentation of the text from
block one of the course (30% of the final
grade), and preparation of a research
proposal in the conversation paper (70% of
the final grade). In the event of a failing
grade on either component, the final grade
is also a failing grade.
