(in Polish) Metodologia badań historycznojęzykowych 1500-SZD-MBHJ
The aim of this course is threefold. First, to present a survey of different theoretical approaches and methodology used in diachronic linguistics. Second, to discuss the application of selected analytical models to historical linguistic data. Third, to analyse the interface between historical linguistics and other domains in modern humanities. The course begins with a general introduction and an overview of basic terms, such as innovation, linguistic change, continuity, perseverance, which is followed by an analysis of the major types of language change (or lack thereof) and their triggering/inhibiting factors. In addition, the course offers students an opportunity to develop practical skills while working with the primary sources – manuscripts, early prints and rare books, critical editions and digital corpora of historical data. The course involves seminar classes and workshops coordinated by a group of historical linguists from different university departments (in the spring semester 2020/21 the classes are given by linguists specializing in Polish, English and German historical linguistics).
