Biodiversity in cultural landscapes: Mazury 1400-4EU-BiCLM
This course is part of the “ABC in Biodiversity” educational path realized as a 4EU+ educational project in cooperation with University Sorbonne and Charles University.
This course is a practical follow-up to the “Biodiversity around the corner” (1400-4EU-BAC) course realized from February to May. This intensive 5 and a half-day field course is provided as a context-based project where students use their knowledge and apply methodologies learnt before. Students engage in the entire research process – asking questions, study design, fieldwork, results analysis and sharing – and in a cross-disciplinary dialogue. Students choose a problem to solve, demanding surpassing a single discipline perspective. They need to place diversity of organisms - including individual- or community-level functional traits - in the spatial context of cultural landscape mosaics, social perception and local demographics. Lakes will be the focus ecosystems, studied along existing environmental and cultural gradients. Projects may focus on functional, aquatic plants or invertebrate species, ecosystem or landscape diversity.
The field course will take place May 22-27, 2022, at the Hydrobiological Station UW, Pilchy, and will include:
- day 0: evening organization meeting
- day 1: lectures, seminars, brainstorming, questions, method preparation
- day 2: field measurements, observations and sample collection – two groups: group 1 on a full-day boat cruise along the Great Masurian Lakes, group 2 on site
- day 3: field measurements, observations and sample collection – two groups: group 1 on site, group 2 on a full-day boat cruise along the Great Masurian Lakes
- day 4: collected data analyses, reports preparation, discussions
- day 5: mini-conference: presentations and discussions, results external dissemination.
Travel costs, from Paris/Prague/Warsaw, depending which is your home university, and accommodation from 22 to 28 of May 2022 in Pilchy are covered by 4EU+ funds.
Students who complete “Biodiversity around the corner” (1400-4EU-BAC) and master students are given priority to join this course.
